1902 - ?

Matsuyama was born in Nagano prefecture in 1902. Hoping to become an artist, he went to Tokyo in 1924, a time when the proletarian art movement was at its height. Influenced by avant-garde art, he joined the Nihon Manga Renmei (Japan Manga Association) with Murayama Tomoyoshi and Yanase Masamu in 1926. Matsuyama found in manga (cartoon art) what he believed to be a real art movement. From the March 1926 issue, he began illustrating for Kodomo no kuni [Children's Land]. Starting with the March 1930 issue, his caricatures of leading artists and writers for Kodomo no kuni appeared serially in the magazine. They were acclaimed for their skillful and humorous portrayals.
