Commentary: This is a science picture book which introduces 145 different types of living creatures which live in the rivers of Japan as the book traces its way downriver from the headwater to the river mouth. The novel composition which depicts views looking up from under the water, and the illustrations, which realistically depict the bottoms of boats floating on the water surface and even inside of the mouths of the fish, are very powerful.
