The International Library of Children's Literature (ILCL) was founded on January 1, 2000 as a branch of the National Diet Library (NDL). It partially opened to the public on May 5, 2000 and started full services on May 5, 2002.
The ILCL provides internationally linked library services for children’s literature and related materials published in Japan and in other countries.
The ILCL is the first national library of its kind in Japan. The ILCL provides various programs devoted to enhancing the reading and information-gathering environment for children’s books, guided by the principle, "Children's books link the world and open up the future."
