The Hans Christian Andersen Awards

The International Library of Children's Literature (ILCL) will be holding an exhibition entitled "The Hans Christian Andersen Awards" in collaboration with the Japan Board on Books for Young People (JBBY), which will celebrate its 50th anniversary this November.

The Hans Christian Andersen Award is an international award given every two years by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) in recognition of lasting contributions to children's literature, and is also known as the "Little Nobel Prize."

This exhibition will introduce all 65 Hans Christian Andersen Award winners from 1956 to 2022 and their works by using materials from the ILCL’s collection.

The IBBY was founded by Jella Lepman, who in the ruins of Germany just after World War II aimed to help children deepen their international understanding through books, and build a peaceful world. We hope that this exhibition will deepen your understanding of the Hans Christian Andersen Award, which was born from Lepman’s wish for peace, and its laureates
