英国の児童書におけるエスニック・マイノリティの描写に関する調査
英国 BookTrust と Centre for Literacy in Primary Education(CLPE)が2017年から2019年に出版された児童書を対象に実施した調査 “Reflecting Realities - Survey of Ethnic Representation within UK Children’s Literature 2019” では、黒人、アジア系、その他のエスニック・マイノリティの登場人物の描写が著しく少ないことが浮き彫りになった。主な調査結果は以下の通りである。
- 2019年に英国で出版された6,478冊の児童書の内、エスニック・マイノリティの人物が登場するのは約10%の680冊である。2018年は7%、2017年は4%だった。
- マイノリティのルーツをもつ小学生は2019年には33.5%を占めているにもかかわらず、エスニック・マイノリティが主人公の児童書はわずか5%である。2018年は4%、2017年は1%だった。
- エスニック・マイノリティを脇役としてしか描いていない本はこれまでに比べて減少した。
- エスニック・マイノリティを描いた絵本やノンフィクションは増加したが、フィクションにおいては大きな変化はなかった。
- 絵本から伝記、歴史小説に至るまで、少数ではあるが、エスニック・マイノリティの人物像が踏み込んで描かれ、ストーリーの転換点を支える存在となっている本がある。社会階層、人種差別、公民権、奴隷制、移民、戦争・紛争、難民、多様性などがテーマの本では、しばしばその傾向が見られる。
- エスニック・マイノリティが主人公の本よりも、動物や物が主人公の本の方が多い。
報告書では、エスニック・マイノリティの描写に特に優れた作品が紹介されている。またエスニック・マイノリティを描いた作品を評価するときのポイントも掲載されている。
BookTrust とCLPEは出版界全体に長期的な変革が必要だとして、より多くの子どもに向けた取り組みを2021年に発表するとしている。両団体は、今の英国の多様な社会を映し出すような本が生まれ、それを読んだ子どもたちが自分の姿やその世界を見出せるよう、出版社等に協力を呼びかけている。
英国最大の読書推進団体である BookTrust は、白人ではない作家・画家を育成し、学校訪問や書店でのイベント、本の提供等を通じて紹介する BookTrust Represents という活動を行っている。その背景には、同団体の調査によって、2017年に作品を発表した作家・画家の内、94%以上が白人であると判明したことがある。BookTrust はこうした活動によって、白人ではない作家・画家の数を2022年までに13%に増やすことを目指している。
CLPEは1972年の設立後、2002年に現在の名称の慈善団体となった。リテラシー教育を支援することを目的として、小学校の教職員に対し良質な児童書の紹介や研修等を行っている。
