Introduction
The story, taken from the eighteenth-century English poet Oliver Smith’s humorous story, The Vicar of Wakefield, concerns a virtuous gentleman bitten by a dog he has taken in and made a pet. The gentleman’s condition is critical, but he eventually recovers, while the dog dies. The tale unfolds in Caldecott’s distinctively evocative drawings.
