Introduction
The story is taken from eighteenth-century poet Oliver Goldsmith’s story The Vicar of Wakefield. The entire town mourns the death of the kind and generous Mrs. Blaize. Caldecott made her a pawnshop owner to illustrate her many virtuous deeds. Given its content, the picture book must have been intended for adult readers.
