伝承童謡のなかでも「積み重ね唄」とよばれ、繰り返しのリズムと奇抜な筋書を展開させることで、無限に続けることができる。コルデコットはまず、表紙と扉に農夫のジャックが玄関で客を迎える場面をおいてから、本来の伝承童謡の内容に沿った絵本に仕立てた。頁を繰る時間と画面の展開がみごとに計算されたコルデコットの達者な筆さばきは、挿絵や装飾とは別の絵本独自の可能性を開いてみせた。
